In the southwest corner of Christie Pits, an entirely volunteer-run organic vegetable and flower garden, has sprouted. Covering 4,000 square feet, it’s impressive and large amounts of produce will be donated to local organizations, including The O’Neill Centre for seniors and a local after-school program called The Nook (run by the Christie Ossington Neighbourhood Centre).
It’s been a real pleasure to do my part in support of this wonderful initiative. Nicole Rochon and Neil Dallhoff Iann (creators and co-ordinators of the garden), and the Friends of Christie Pits have enhanced our park and neighbourhood immeasurably. I had a terrific time at the groundbreaking ceremony in June, rolling up my sleeves and getting to work along with many others in the neighbourhood. Altogether, at my request, the City committed about $12,000 to help the gardeners create, plant, and protect this new addition to our popular and vibrant park.
Together, these dedicated community members and O’Neill Centre seniors and staff have created a space that operates on the principles of inclusion and respect for each other and the environment. And you don't have to be an expert gardener to be a part of it.
