ALAMP (Adaptive Lighting Asset Management Program) is a Toronto Hydro program, in partnership with Toronto Atmospheric Fund’s (TAF) Lightsavers program, the two are working together to test newer, more efficient forms of streetlighting technology and then share their findings with other municipalities. There is great potential here to reduce energy consumption and green house gases and to enhance public safety and the ambient quality of lighting on the street through LED technology. Did you know that the use of LED street lights can reduce the cost of running them by 50%?! I am proud to say that there is an ALAMP pilot in Ward 19, on Delaware Avenue, just south of Bloor Street West.
Toronto Hydro Energy’s Street Lighting Division is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the City’s approximately 160,000 street and pedestrian walkway light fixtures. With new technologies developing all the time, ALAMP torontohydroenergy.com/alamp.html was launched to
- research, test and implement new street lighting technology and controls
- find the most energy efficient and cost effective street lighting solution for the City of Toronto that meets the Illumination Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) RP8 Roadway Lighting guideline
- ensure recommended street lighting solutions enhance public safety and streetscape ambiance.
TAF’s Lightsavers program (toronto.ca/taf/lightsavers.htm) supports LED light pilots in parking garages and lots, pedestrian pathways, and in architectural lighting.
