In the summer of 2006, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health started major renovations to their buildings. This massive undertaking on Queen Street West will completely re-invent CAMH in the form of an ‘urban village.’ The new site will preserve heritage elements, such as the historic wall, while modernizing the hospital to facilitate patient care. The redevelopment will integrate institutional facilities with non-CAMH uses.
On June 26, 2008, CAMH celebrated both its tenth birthday and the Grand Opening of Phase 1A of its “Transforming Lives Here” redevelopment. Furthermore, the release of a Request for Qualifications for Phase 1B (which identifies project teams that have the required design, the construction and facilities management capabilities, and the financial capacity to undertake a redevelopment project of this size and complexity) represents a second achievement; it marks the transformation of CAMH’s site at 1001 Queen Street West into a mixed-use urban village that will benefit all those requiring treatment and rehabilitation. Construction of this next phase is scheduled to begin in early 2010, with completion targeted in late 2012.
As this project progresses, I remain committed to working closely with the community to ensure that adequate green space, environmental efficiencies, and comprehensive design principles are incorporated into the project as planned.
